IPL for Facial Rejuvenation

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It is a type of light therapy that applies the LASER principles to treat various skin conditions. IPL uses lights of different wavelengths (400 - 1200 nm). IPL is different than LASER since it has a range of wavelengths in comparison to LASER that has a specific wavelength. Also, while LASER is characterized by using a focused coherent beam, IPL is scattered and less coherent.

Additional Facts

Who is a good candidate for IPL for Facial Rejuvenation?

Overall healthy patients who desire facial rejuvenation.

Intense pulsed light treatments are ideal for individuals with light to medium complexions looking to improve fine lines, wrinkles, skin tone, freckles, age spots, hemangioma (e.g. birthmark or broken blood vessels), rosacea, sun damage, vascular lesions, or capillary inflammation. Because of the multiple wavelengths used during an IPL treatment, it can be adjusted for a spectrum of skin tones. However, fair skin that is relatively elastic and “freckle-prone” shows the greatest improvement.

What are IPL for Facial Rejuvenation contraindications?

We recommend avoiding the procedure in severe or uncontrolled systemic diseases, connective tissue disease, malignancy, unrealistic expectations, local skin pathology and pregnancy.

Note: A contraindication is a condition or factor that serves as a reason to withhold a certain medical treatment due to the harm that it would cause the patient.

How is this procedure performed?

-A treatment with the MedPulse IPL or Intense pulsed light is a non-invasive, non-ablative treatment that delivers high-intensity light into the deeper layers of the skin to improve fine lines & wrinkles, vascular lesions, redness, broken capillaries, and sun spots. The range and wavelength of the light emitted during the treatment can be adjusted to accommodate your specific skin needs and concerns.

- Certain IPL filters are used to achieve the desired wavelength based on the treatment goal. The IPL waves penetrate into the dermis of the skin without affecting the superficial layer. The energy is then absorbed by pigment in the target tissue leading to rupture of the cell and subsequent elimination of the pigment (e.g. freckle, sun spot).

- Intense pulsed light treatments are not entirely pain-free, although the level of discomfort depends upon your individual threshold for pain. It is common for a topical numbing cream to be applied before treatment to reduce the sensation that is often compared to the snapping of a rubber band on the skin.

- Multiple treatments might be needed.

How long does the effect last?

Results vary per patient and skin type but improvement is expected to be long term.

What should I expect during recovery?

- Recovery is fast after IPL and patients can immediately resume regular activities.

- Some redness, skin sensitivity and swelling can occur during recovery which last for a few hours to a few days.

- Avoid sun exposure and hot showers after IPL.

- Skin moisturizers are commonly used after IPL treatments.

Where is the scar?

There are no incisions or scars. However, scarring is an uncommon complication that can occur after the procedure.

Laser and Injectables - Should have done it sooner!

This was my first experience with any type of injectables/laser treatments. I felt at ease with the physican and staff. They were very friendly and made me feel welcome. The gave me a tour of their facility, which was very clean, modern. I am no longer a botox virgin! My frown line has diminished, little by little, each day! I also had laser treatments for my eyes and for a vericose vein on my thigh. You wouldn't believe the results after just one treatment! I wish I had the pictures to share with you. Anyway, I highly recommend this establishment...why wait...make an appointment now! I wish I would have made my sooner!
