Additional Facts

Who is a good candidate for Lip Augmentation?

  • Patients who want a fuller upper or lower lip with youthful projection yet maintaining a natural appearance.

What are Lip Augmentation contraindications?

Facial nerve disorders, recurrent herpes simplex lesions, uncontrolled medical problems as diabetes, hypertension or autoimmune disease, unrealistic expectations and pregnancy.

Note: A contraindication is a condition or factor that serves as a reason to withhold a certain medical treatment due to the harm that it would cause the patient.

How is this procedure performed?

The procedure is done under local topical anesthesia. You do not need sedation or general anesthesia for lip augmentation. Actually, we prefer to have the patients awake and frequently looking in the mirror during the different stages of the procedure to make sure we meet their aesthetic goals and involve the patient in achieving the results they are looking for. Dermal fillers are injected into and around the upper and lower lips. Icing is performed before and after the procedure to decrease swelling and bruising.

How long does the effect last?

This varies based on the filler used and the patient but usually 9 months to a year.

What should I expect during recovery?

Mild swelling and bruising can occur, therefore, icing is recommended after the procedure. Some patients, with history of herpes, might experience reactivation of herpes lesions around the mouth which is treated with antiviral.

Where is the scar?

There is no incision or scar.
