Dermal Filler
- As we age or lose weight, we lose volume in our face. Fillers aim to replace the lost volume, provide soft lines (instead of deep noticeable lines of the face) and lift tissue. Fillers are very commonly used in facial rejuvenation.
- There are many types and brands of dermal fillers, they can be temporary (e.g. Hyaluronic Acid or HA fillers) as Juvederm, Restylane or permanent as Bellafill.
- Common areas to be injected: teartrough (under the eye), nasolabial folds (smile lines), lips, around the jowls, cheeks and liquid rhinoplasty (nose).
- It is very important to think of the face as cosmetic units and discuss how augmenting an area of the face would affect the neighboring areas and the balance of the face.

Who is a good candidate for Dermal Filler?
Overall healthy patients who desire to:
- Soften facial lines and wrinkles rejuvenating the face.
- Add volume to the face.
- Add volume to the hands to compensate for lost volume and prominent appearance of the tendons in the back of the hands.
- Improve the appearance of scars.
What are Dermal Filler contraindications?
We recommend avoiding the procedure in severe or uncontrolled systemic diseases, connective tissue disease, malignancy, unrealistic expectations, local skin pathology and pregnancy.
Note: A contraindication is a condition or factor that serves as a reason to withhold a certain medical treatment due to the harm that it would cause the patient.
How is this procedure performed?
- The procedure is done using topical anesthetic.
- Icing is used before and after to help with anesthesia and decrease swelling.
- The skin is cleaned with alcohol
- The filler is injected using small needle.
- Many fillers contain Lidocaine (numbing medication) to decrease discomfort.
- If Belafill filler is used, an allergy skin test is performed prior to the procedure.
How long does the effect last?
- Temporary fillers as Juvederm, Restylane last for approximately 9 months.
- Semi-permanent fillers as Scupltra last for approximately 18 months.
- Permanent fillers as Belafill last for approximately five or more years..
What should I expect during recovery?
Mild swelling and bruising can occur and usually resolve within a few days. Icing can decrease these side effects.
Where is the scar?
There are no incisions or scars.
