What are Gastric Bypass contraindications?

Contraindications include:

  • High anesthesia risk e.g. severe heart or lung disease
  • High bleeding risk e.g. liver cirrhosis
  • Pregnancy
  • Active inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract e.g. Crohns disease.
  • Non compliance with behavioral modifications
  • Active infection
  • Active drug or alcohol abuse
  • uncontrolled psychiatric disorder

Note: A contraindication is a condition or factor that serves as a reason to withhold a certain medical treatment due to the harm that it would cause the patient.

How is this procedure performed?

The procedure is done via minimally invasive approach using small laparoscopic incisions (usually 5 or 6). Surgical stapler is used to divide the stomach creating a small pouch, the intestine is divided, rerouted and the final configuration of the gastrointestinal tract resembles a Y configuration where the pouch is connected to a food channel which in turn is connected to the enzymes channel to form the common channel where absorption takes place. Gastric bypass has a strong effect on the patient's gut hormones leading to elimination or improvement of multiple diseases e.g. High blood pressure, Diabetes, high cholesterol.

How long does the effect last?

Maintaining the weight off requires patient's compliance with healthy eating and exercise habits.

What should I expect during recovery?

Hospital stay is usually 1-2 days. Nausea and bloating are not uncommon and are usually easily controlled with medications. After the surgery, you will be on liquid diet for 2 weeks. Activity is gradually increased as healing progresses.

Where is the scar?

The small scars are located in the upper abdomen

A doctor's doctor

I am a physician. After researching and exploring all my options for bariatric surgery, I decided to see Dr. Akkary. Based on his reputation, I even went out of network to have him do my surgery. I can attest that Dr. Akkary is a superb clinician with a great bedside manner as well. I would recommend him to anyone in need of bariatric, or any general surgical procedures. His staff is also excellent.

I had the VSG

I had the VSG by Dr. Akkary. He and his office are AMAZING! I am so thankful for their kindness, ability to make you feel comfortable, dedication, skills, and their knowledge. I cannot begin to put into words how thankful I am for this surgery. This is a tool that is helping me continue on my journey towards health and wellness. Prior to meeting Dr. Akkary, I was struggling with continuing on my weight loss journey and was feeling very frustrated. As of today, I am 3 weeks out and down 20# from the day of surgery. That is amazing. If you are thinking about Bariatric surgery, I highly recommend Dr. Akkary and his office. They are my heroes because they are helping me get my life back.

Gave me my life back

Dr. Akkary gave me my life back. I’m almost 7 months post op. Down 134lbs with 50 more to goal. I love my new me and I can’t wait for my skin revisions. Thank you Dr. Akkary.

Lost over 50 percent of my weight

This is my story, for most of my adult life I have struggled with my weight. I had severe depression and was taking more then one antidepressant. I had high cholesterol (on medication). I had sleep apnea and used a c-pap machine at night. I had other minor issues as well. In 2006 I started looking into having weight loss surgery. In 2008 I decided to take control of my weight! I went to see Doctor Akkary. Together we concluded that the lap band was the right procedure for me. I have to tell you, it was the best decision I have ever made in my life!! After the first year I had lost over 50 percent of my weight, no longer needed any and i repeat ANY medication. The c-pap machine also a thing of the past.( It’s great to sleep at night without that contraption). By my second year I had reached 100 percent weight loss. Four years later, I am still at 100 percent, and feel better than I have felt in a long time. I started the program weighing over 245 lbs, today I maintain a weight of 127 to 133 pounds. Doctor Akkary and his staff have been there every step of the way. If I had any questions or concerns my mind was always put at ease. I got the personal attention I needed to be successful! Having this surgery gave me my life back. I went back to school, have a new rewarding career in the medical field. I can run a 5k, something I used to only be able to watch. I don’t have any trouble keeping up with my two young grandchildren. Best of all I’m healthy and medication free!

10 week post op

I’m only 10 weeks post op; total of 12 with liquid diet. I have came such a long ways. I started out at 261. I am now down to 200. Dr Akkary has changed my life. No, it hasn’t been the easiest road, but this journey is worth the wild…I can’t wait to see what the rest of it brings…thank you so much!

Thoroughly explained

Dr. Akkary and his staff are very knowledgeable and professional. I had a lot of questions about the various types of weight loss surgeries, and Dr. Akkary patiently and thoroughly explained each one and addressed all of my questions so I could make the best decision for me. He's the kind of doc who takes this time for all of his patients, and it is so reassuring! The office staff have also been very friendly, helpful, and responsive. Love the convenience of the newer location as well! Definitely recommend them for any general, bariatric, or cosmetic procedures!

Helped save my life

I absolutely recommend Dr. Akkary and his staff. I felt completely 100% comfortable throughout my journey with my gastric by pass surgery!! Since my first visit with you in January until now I am 90 lbs lighter and much healthier!!! The kind and caring manner of everyone made this journey even better!! You helped save my life!! As a Breast Cancer survivor whose cancer was Estrogen driven and being very obese was keeping my risk of Breast Cancer returning high. My oncologist at every visit would always tell me I need to lose weight (multiple things tried with no success). Well at my last Onco visit my tumor marker was checked and it came back at 19!!! Ever since breast cancer it has been running 35-38 which was on the high side for me per my oncologist!! So to drop to half of what it had been is a blessing!! So I can’t thank you all enough for giving me my life back in more ways than one!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
